PROGRAM OVERVIEW
PHASE I & PHASE II
The Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute occurs in two phases. During Phase I in Kansas City, MO, scholars participate in a two week overview to healthcare leadership and policies from leading executives in the field. Upon successful completion of Phase I, scholars are awarded a stipend. Based upon their performance during Phase I, scholars may be selected to participate the following summer in Phase II, a 10 to 12 week paid internship with housing in a premier healthcare environment or association where they are exposed to the development and execution of health policies by the C-Suite.
EXPECTATIONS
Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute (BHLI) Scholar Expectations
• Maintain executive presence throughout the Institute
• Complete self-assessments and inventories
• Interact with speakers, other program participants, and healthcare partners during onsite visits
• Participate in group activities including the development and delivery of a final presentation on a healthcare topic at the Institute’s closing ceremony
• Complete all reading assignments
• Submit a reflective paper about the BHLI experience and its impact.

PHASE I PROGRAM VENUES
Programming for the Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute will be organized throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area at the following partnering sites: Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City; Kansas City, MO Department of Health; Kauffman Conference Center; Netsmart Technologies, Inc.; Operation Breakthrough; Polsinelli; Quest Diagnostics; Stowers Institute for Medical Research; Swope Health Services; and University Health.

Kansas City is a dynamic metropolis backed by a vibrant arts scene, world-class attractions, and an eclectic mix of shops. The city is home to pro sports teams including the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs, and Sporting KC.

All scholars will be housed at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. The University offers suite-style residence halls within easy walking distance to Swinney Recreation Center, the Country Club Plaza, The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art.
Internet service will be provided. Scholars are required to bring personal laptop computers.
